Pheromones are the naturally releasing scents that all animals including humans emit. Scientifically, the scent is for mating purposes. Much research has been done with animals such as monkeys to determine exactly how important pheromones really are to the breeding cycle.

In humans, while pheromones are important, they are less subtle, as humans are not necessarily looking to populate the species. It is also true that many men and women are “turned off” by certain odors and “turned on” by other scents. Perfumes, colognes and after shave lotions are good examples of pleasing scents. But the question remains whether man-made pheromones in a bottle really excite, displease or do nothing.

Logically, if real pheromones can be duplicated, then it follows that pheromones in a bottle are effective. Studies show that the majority of people react in the same way to different odors so it can be assumed that some pheromones will produce a desired result. This is all scientific, however, based on the real scent emitted from a real person.

There are actually several reasons why bottled pheromones do not work:

• The wearer has no guarantee that the substance is actually pheromones. Pheromone Cologne sometimes doesn’t even contain pheromones!
• Different companies will produce different products. Some may be just water while others will be legitimate products.
• Pheromones are normally marketed to men. The ads read about attracting women at the drop of the hat. It makes it seem like the women are somehow brainwashed. Much like an old science fiction movie where people were made to do illegal acts while hypnotized. This is not reality.
• Women are not attracted to smell alone. They look at how the man is dressed, his facial features, his body shape and maybe even how he talks. All of these facets combined go into the decision to like a man.
• Humans have evolved and lost much of their smelling instinct. It is true that certain smells evoke certain responses but because humans use other factors in decision making, such as the heart and the brain, and not just smell like animals, pheromones alone are not likely to get women to “jump up and down and bark like a dog”.
• Colognes and perfumes can have the same effect as pheromones in the sense that women or men may be turned on by the scents.
• Pheromones are male oriented products, engineered by males to males creating the ultimate illusion.
